Vietnam contains two important BRI projects:

a) the Dau Tieng solar energy project with an investment of $310 million which China Power paid.

b) Nam Dinh 1 coal power project with an investment of about 16 billion dollars.

By the way, we can conclude that involving of this country in the BRI cause to more need to bitumen.

Vietnam Bitumen Production:

Vietnam did not have any bitumen production up to 2018. it is estimated that it won’t produce till 2024 unless Nghi Son Refinery, an oil refinery in Vietnam, starts to produce the bitumen besides its other products such as:

• Polypropylene
• Gasoline
• LPG
• Fuel oil
• Benzene
• kerosene

Vietnam Bitumen Consumption:

Since there is no bitumen production industry in this country, the demand for bitumen is provided by imports.

In 2018 and 2019, financial problems and a lack of funds reduced the construction and implementation of bitumen consumption. other words, consumption in 2018 was approximately 773,000 tons which were less than in 2016 and 2017.

In general, Bitumen consumption in Vietnam is as follows:

• 97% bitumen pavement
• 3% roofing bitumen

Vietnam Road Construction:

Up to 2018, about 20% of the national roads in Vietnam were paved.

One of the infrastructure projects that will continue until 2030 is the construction of a north-south highway with 1372 km long. Also, several other highways are built to develop connectivity through different cities.

Anyhow, most of the construction projects are expected to be completed before 2040.

Vietnam Bitumen Export:

up to 2018, Vietnam had no export of bitumen. However, in 2019, it started exporting this black substance. As a matter of fact, that year, exporting $6.18 million of bitumen, making it the 52nd largest exporter of bitumen worldwide.

The locations for importing bitumen from Vietnam are:

• Laos
• Cambodia
• Philippines

Vietnam Bitumen Import:

Most of the need for bitumen in Vietnam is provided by importing it from other countries. Not to mention that Vietnam became the 6th largest bitumen importer worldwide in 2020 by importing $274 million of bitumen. Moreover, the most imported grade in Vietnam is Pen 60/70.  Not only does Vietnam import drums but also cargo Volumes as well. but most of the volume is cargo.

All in all, about 60% or more is imported from Singapore, and the rest are from Taiwan, Iran, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and India.
