A Brief Look at Taiwan:
Taiwan, known as the Republic of China (ROC), is in East Asia. The bitumen industry in Taiwan is mainly concentrated in the southern part of the country, especially in the Kaohsiung and Tainan areas. Two bitumen-producing refineries exist in Taiwan:
- Simosa Oil which produces bitumen in Mailiao
- Chinese Petroleum Company (CPC) in Taoyuan.
It is noticeable that Simosa Oil includes 30-40%, and CPC includes 60-70% of the domestic market.
The bitumen production in Taiwan mainly depends on imported crude oil, which is processed in local refineries to produce various grades of bitumen.
In recent years, Taiwan has been working on finding alternative materials for road construction, like recycled materials and synthetic resins, but, these materials have not been very successful in replacing with bitumen. So, bitumen will maintain its position in the infrastructure projects in Taiwan.
Taiwan Bitumen Consumption:
Over the past few years, bitumen consumption in Taiwan has increased steadily. The uses of bitumen in this country are mostly because of asphalt production, which is utilized in road construction and maintenance.
There is a possibility about the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic on bitumen consumption in Taiwan, like other countries in the world.
Several road construction projects were done or planned to be done soon. We mention some of them here for you:
- Central Taiwan Science Park Road:
This project will construct a new road connecting Central Taiwan Science Park to the national highway system. The length of this road will be nearly 5.5 km.
- New Taipei City Circular Highway:
This project aims to construct a circular highway around New Taipei City. The length of the highway will be around 68 kilometers.
- Southern Taiwan Science Park Road:
This project aims to construct a new road connecting the Southern Taiwan Science Park to the national highway system.
- Hualien-Taitung Coastal Highway:
This project will make the existing coastal road between Hualien and Taitung much safer and more efficient for vehicles and drivers. This project aims to widen the road, construct new bridges and tunnels, and improve drainage roads.
These cases were just some examples of the many road construction projects in Taiwan to improve transportation and create more business there. Therefore, the need for bitumen and asphalt will increase very soon.
Taiwan Bitumen Imports:
This country imports most of its bitumen from other countries, such as the United States, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and Iran, to meet its domestic demand for infrastructure projects.
Mentioned countries are some of the significant bitumen producers which have made trade relations with Taiwan to supply its need for bitumen.
The main importer of this black substance into Taiwan is CPC. The cargoes include bulk and drum bitumen.
Since Simosa Oil has excess bitumen production, it does not import. Accordingly, it mainly exports.
By the way, Taiwan bitumen imports play an essential role in Taiwan’s construction industry because it helps meet the demand for bitumen and supports the country’s development.
Taiwan Bitumen Exports:
As we mentioned in the last paragraph, Simosa Oil exports bitumen. However, the bitumen production of CPC is utilized only for domestic demands.
We expected that most of the volume would export to Vietnam and the Philippines and smaller quantities go to Australia, Malaysia, and some other countries.
